Insurance:
How do I reduce my car expenses, insurance, gas, monthly payments? The best thing is to make sure you have a good driving record. Don’t get tickets, don’t have accidents. If you get a ticket see if you can take a driver safety course instead of having points added to your DMV record.
Also on insurance, make sure you have the right liability coverage. I am not saying you should have the smallest liability. You need to look at your assets. If you have assets that could be lost in a lawsuit, carry a lot of liability. If you have no assets, carry the smallest liability.
Comp/Collision, since I told you not to have accidents and you are going to do that, get a higher deductible and drop unnecessary coverage. you don’t need uninsured motorists or rental car insurance. (These are good things to have if you can afford them, but you don’t need them.)
Gas:
Find the lowest price Top Tier gas in your area.
Keep your car in good running shape. Do maintenance like changing dirty filters.
Drive to get the best mileage.
Monthly Payment:
If you already have a payment, you may be stuck. Your car may be worth less than you owe and you can’t sell it without having to come up with more money to pay off the loan. But, if you have an expensive car and a big payment, you can downsize the car. Get rid of the expensive one and get an economy car instead.
Public Transportation:
You can use public transportation and get rid of your car. you can use rental cars or UBER/LYFT on those occasions when you need to, and get by without a car the rest of the time.
As long as there are human drivers on the road there will be the need for insurance. For example, suppose a driverless car is involved in an accident with a driver-operated car. Who or what will, or can be, found at fault? Will the driverless car be deemed to be liable as a person, an agent of a corporation, or will it be seen as above the law? There is a "driving" need for clarification here before these cars tangle with regular human-oriented traffic.
